Sexual harassment has been a term coined in the US since the 1970’s when the woman’s liberation movement recognized this damaging behavior that has existed for thousands of years. In the 1970’s and 1980’s, the Supreme Court gave legal recognition to the fact that a woman finally could sue her employer for sexual harassment using Title VII of the Civil Rights Act. Currently, this is not just a women’s issue as about 25% of men will report this behavior in their life. It is also a pervasive problem in our country as a person is sexually assaulted about every 98 seconds in the US. The list of alleged perpetrators ranges from Harvey Weinstein and Kevin Spacey and other well-known political figures. The victims include everyone from Olympian Gabby Douglas to celebrities Angelina Jolie and Rose McGowan. In addition, no company is immune when it comes to legal liability. Yet despite this history and these alarming statistics, sexual assault and harassment have been getting more attention than ever thus sparking incredible and powerful social movements such as #MeToo and #TimesUp.
